Tutorial: Installing WordPress 2.8 on Plesk

30

In this tutorial we will cover the process for installing WordPress 2.8 on Plesk. There is a 2 part screen cast as well as some text you’ll need to read in order to accomplish this. So lets go ahead and get started.

Step 1: Setting Up The Database

YouTube Preview Image

Step 2: Downloading The Software

You’ll need to download WordPress 2.8 from wordpress.org if you haven’t done so already as well as an FTP client. I will be using FileZilla for this tutorial

  • Download WordPress 2.8 here.
  • Download FileZilla here.

Download and extract WordPress to a location of your choice. Then download Filezilla and add it to your Applications folder if you’re on a Mac, for Windows users, you’ll have to run the installer.

Step 3: WordPress Configuration and Installation

YouTube Preview Image

And that’s it, you should now have a running WordPress 2.8 installation. I’ll continue making some more tutorials for WordPress, mainly customizing, themes, plugins, etc…

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial and that it was helpful. Thanks for reading, donations are welcome :)

So new to all of this. Asking for help! Using Parellels Plesk Panel 9.2 host server, used a one click install of wordpress using 4PSA integrator, have domain name all set and included. Do I still have to fill in DB name, user, and password in the wp-config-sample.php and rename it to wp-config.php, even though I already a wp-config.php file that shows the DB name, user and password already filled in? I don’t have to install wordpress on my mac here to my local drive, do I, since it is on the host server? Obviously I’m such a beginner here….also use cyberduck for ftp. Thanks so much for your help!

You shouldn’t have to, if the information is already filled in, by using the one click install, your wordpress blog should be ready for use. Are you experiencing any particular problems getting something working?

Thank you! I really do have experience in computers. You asked about what problems I have as far as getting started. I certainly don’t mean to turn your comments section into some comedian center, but the answer is “everything” since I don’t know what to do yet. :) Would you mind emailing me? I do understand some lingo. Thanks, and a nice blog you have here also. Was getting ready to purchase a wp theme, actually also.

Thanks, don’t want to be a burden, hopefully just a few startup things, and then I can roll with the rest. Looking at using this theme…

Great idea. More info where you can see it…at the top. Successfully created ftp client using cyberduck. Assuming this theme has an admin panel through WordPress? Going to buy it here soon. Wonder where do I login to wordpress.org if I don’t have it installed on my computer since it’s all on the server?

Hope I’m not overstepping here by giving this out. They were listed in comments from the blog on a theme page. But here are some examples, Chris, of some sites utilizing the wp-magazine them. They look sharp.

Thought you’d want to check it out. The sports cars is pretty cool.

  11. Chris says:

Charlie, basically the themes themselves don’t have an admin panel. Themes are installed via the admin panel and then are customized by adding posts, widgets, plug-ins, etc…

I will probably be doing a video tutorial on adding themes to wordpress.

  15. Kenneth Huey says:

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s grateful for your tutorial, Chris– my host’s tech support couldn’t give much help, but they did recommend your video!

My problem is, I’m following all your instructions, which are in line with everything else I’m reading online about installing WP to a subdomain, but when I put the wp-admin/install.php URL into my browser, instead of taking me to the welcome page, it keeps wanting to download the install.php file.

I’m trying to run a Webcomic using the ComicsPress theme, to be accessible at http://comic.mydomain.com. So I made a new database on my server and uploaded all the files in my local WordPress folder to mydomain.com/subdomains/comic/httpdocs. (I’ve even tried using that address– using my real directory names, of course– but the browser just shows “Not found.”)

I’m pretty sure my wp-config.php is filled out correctly, but do I need to edit the absolute path field in there, or mess with something in Plesk that I’ve been overlooking? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Ken

  16. Chris says:

It sounds like you are doing everything right, for some reason though it seems like your server isn’t recognizing the php file as it should. Have you been able to run other php scripts on this server ? When you created your sub-domain did you enable php ? there should be check mark towards the bottom when creating a new sub-domain of what you want to enable, php is one of the options and may not be checked by default.

Let me know how it goes.

  17. Kenneth Huey says:

Turned out to be really simple. When you make a new subdomain, you need to turn on PHP support for that subdomain.

In Plesk, you go to Home, and under Hosting click on the Subdomains icon– click on the subdomain you need to affect–and then under Services, check PHP Support.

    Voila!

Thanks again for your tutorial, Chris, it was invaluable.

    Hi Chris,

I went through and completed the steps and everything seemed to go fine, except CoreFTP decided to dump in the middle of the upload, so I deleted and redid it. I normally type my domain name/wp-admin to go into wordpress. It wont work typing/wordpress. So I log in normally but I am presented with the normal admin screen, not what you have????? Any ideas? Should I change it to what you suggested, into the root?

Did you already have a previous version of wordpress installed or is this a new install ? If you’ve already had a previous install, then its possible that some of the settings are still there.

    Let me know

No problem, can you email me a screenshot of your root folder on you server ?

How do you want people to access the blog ? You basically have 3 choices:

    http://www.mydomain.com/
    http://blog.mydomain.com/
    http://www.mydomain.com/wordpress/

Let me know, I’d be happy to help any way I can

    Hi Chris,
I was forwarded your website by my hosting company which has great things to say about you.

I was able to put most of the WP together but have two main issues I really hope you can help me with.
I installed WP 2.8.4 and have had problems with visiting URL and clicking through to another post I have this following error appear: Not Found: The requested URL /blog/category/introduction/ was not found on this server. I’m not sure how that can be.

Also, half of my tags do not work. When I click on the upload image tag it does not work or recognized. I half reloaded the Quicktags in my WP-Content JS folder.

    Any help would be fantastic.
    Thank you in advance.

Wow, thank you that worked immediately.

Only issue I have now is trying to upload images or places tags.
I click on Icons and nothing happens. Same when I wish to add tags. It won’t let me do anything.
Any easy fixes like the last one.

Thank you so much again…in advance.
