XBOX 360 Lite-On Firmware Hack

250

Comodo

So I went out and bought an XBOX 360 the other day and the first think I did after opening the box of course, is, I took it apart to have a look at the guts. I purchased the Arcade version of the 360 which came with a Lite-On DVD drive, and so the search began.

Being new to the whole XBOX community I had no idea how to go about modding it so that I can play backup’s and the tutorials on the internet are not very descriptive for a new comer. So I found a few sites with some good information and found all the tools I needed after hours of searching.

So now I’d like to give back to the community and write a very simple easy to understand tutorial, as well as providing you with all of the necessary tools and show you how to flash mod the xbox 360 to play copied games. It should be noted that this is an xbox 360 liteon drive mod and wont work for any of the other DVD drives.

This mod is considered a soft mod for the XBOX 360 and will allow you to mod the xbox 360 without a mod chip. This is done by flashing the firmware of your xbox 360 dvd-drive.

Required Software:

  • ixtreme_15.rar – Download this file, it has everything we need in it. Thanks to ixtreme we can save ourselves a lot of time.

Required Hardware:

  • A PC with an available SATA port as well as a COM ( DB-9 / Serial ) port.
  • TX Probe, Scroll down for a schematic on how to build one, or pay me $20.00 and I’ll send you one.

Prerequisites:

  • Disassemble the XBOX 360 and take out the DVD Drive – Look for a tutorial on YouTube

There are 4 Steps to this tutorial, they are:

  1. Building The TX Probe ( approximately 30 min. depending on experience )
  2. Preparing Your XBOX 360 DVD Drive ( approximately 15 min. depending on experience )
  3. Key Dumping ( approximately 5 min. depending on experience )
  4. Flashing ( approximately 5 min. depending on experience )

Total Time:

  • Disassemble XBOX 360 — 30 min
  • Follow My Tutorial — 55 min
  • Reassemble XBOX 360 — 20 min
  • Playing Any Game You Want — Timeless !! :)

Building The TX Probe:

For your convenience I have hyperlinked all the parts back to their respective Radio Shack links.

Preparing The XBOX 360 DVD Drive:

Before we can do anything else we need to make sure that the XBOX 360′s DVD drive is half open. To do this push the eject button on the XBOX and after the drive is fully open remove the connection cable from the back of the drive and then push the tray until it is half open. DO NOT RECONNECT THE CABLE YET.

Before we reconnect the cable we need to remove pin 3. This pin controls the opening / closing of the tray. With this pin removed the XBOX will not be able to eject or close the drive tray.

Now that we have the DVD drive set the way we want we can move on to the next step.

Key Dumping:

Connect your XBOX 360′s DVD drive via the SATA cable to your computers SATA port and power on your drive. If you are powering your drive from the XBOX 360, then make sure that you removed Pin 3 from the connection cable before turning the 360 on.

Back of DVD Drive

Assuming that you’ve already downloaded ixtreme_1.5.rar we can move right along and open up jungleflasher.exe which you can find in the JungleFlasher .26 BETA folder within the folder that has the extracted contents of ixtreme_1.5.rar

Probing TX Point

Probing TX Point

  • Go to the DVDKey32 tab and go through the I/O ports until you see the info for your liteon drive under drive properties.
  • Make sure your drive is ejected and pushed in half way. Select your COM port, connect your TX Probe and probe to the Tx (R707) point while pressing the Get Key Button.
  • Save all the files to a folder

Note: If you get an error saying your hardware isn’t working. check over the adapter make sure everything is correct. try testing it with a multimeter. If all else fails, you may need to buy/build a “proper” max232/max3232 adapter.

If the above step worked, dump the key another two times just to be sure you get the same key! and SAVE ALL THE BIN FILES TO A DISK OR USB STICKTHIS IS YOUR BACKUP LIFELINE.

  • Go to the FirmwareTool32 tab and click Load From Dump Files.
  • Select the files you saved previously, and chose where to save the dummy.bin
  • Click Open Target Firmware and select ix15-liteon.bin which you extracted from ixtreme_1.5.rar. It should show YOUR KEY in the box
  • Press Spoof Source to Target and save your CFW.bin

You should now have the keys dumped, and your new firmware spoofed. We can now proceed to the next and final step.

Flashing:

Now that we have everything prepared, we can flash the firmware of the DVD drive. Up until now we have not modified anything on the DVD drive. If you want you can put your XBOX 360 back together right now and it will still work.

Although its almost impossible to brick your drive with this method, there’s still that 1% chance that something can go wrong. Please know that I am not responsible for what happens to your 360. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself then scroll down to the bottom and read my instructions for sending me your XBOX 360 so that I can do the mod for you.

  • Turn your DVD drive off and then back on, then go to the MTK Flash 32 tab. select the sata port which displays the info for your liteon.
  • Press Lite-On-Erase.
  • Once you see the “…” quickly turn your drive off and back on.
  • When that’s finished it should display xx72 and some flash information. this means your drive is ready to be flashed!
  • Click the Write button. It should flash and verify all 4 sectors. if all goes well you are done!

Hopefully just as with my other tutorials, you have enjoyed this one or at least found it useful or helpful. Well as always if I left something out or there’s something I could simplify then leave me a comment and I’d be happy to edit the tutorial.

Purchase TX Probe:

$40.00 is all it will cost you, the TX Probe is required for Flashing Lite-On DVD drives since the drives keys need to be dumped and spoofed.

Just click the Add To Cart Button and checkout. [wp_eStore:product_id:5:end]

XBOX 360 Modding FAQ:

Q: Can my 360 be flashed back to its original unmodded state?
A: YES! When you get your 360 flashed by me, I will give you a CD which contains the DVD drives original Firmware for that very reason! Please keep the CD safe and don’t lose it.

Q: Do you offer a guarantee or replace my 360 if you break it?
A: No I offer no guarantee, but if your 360 gets messed up while flashing, I will replace it free of charge.

Q: Once my xbox 360 is modded, is there any way I can accidentally brick, break or ruin my xbox 360 or the MOD(or hack) will mess up or ruin my xbox 360?
A: NO. The MOD (or hack) is applied to the DVD drive itself, nothing inside the 360(Mainboard, CPU, GPU, etc) is touched. The MOD is a “Firmware” hack and its physically impossible for it to ruin/brick/mess up your Xbox 360.

Q: Can I play on Xbox LIVE without getting banned?
A: YES! The latest hacked firmware (iXtreme 1.51) offers excellent protection from getting banned from Xbox LIVE. There is always a risk of getting banned, but the chances are very low. You can safely play Wave 3 games now without worry of being banned! There is always a risk of getting banned, but the chances are very low. You can only be banned from playing an improperly burned game or someone who is inexperienced and flashed your xbox wrong.

Q: Do you offer compensation if I get banned from Xbox LIVE?
A: NO. I offer no guarantee/compensation of ANY kind if you get banned from XB LIVE.

Q: Is this LEGAL?
A: YES. Having backups of games is LEGAL if you own the original copy. See legal Disclaimer below…

    Jack,

Wish I could give you a definite answer on that, but unfortunately I am unsure of what Microsoft is looking at when they do their checks. My guess is that they check the firmware of the drive. My advice to you is that if you don’t want to risk being banned then you should stay offline, however the reason not to get banned is to be able to play online.

The other part is that even if you re-flash the original firmware, I’m not sure that you wont get banned because Microsoft may detect that the firmware was modified.

    Sorry I can’t help you more… Chris

  11. Chris says:

    Andi,

When you said you flashed the new drive, did you extract the keys from the old drive and use those to flash the new drive with?

The reason I ask is because the keys on the drive must match the keys on the mobo… if they aren’t the same then the drive will not load any games, so first extract the keys from the new drive and put them in a safe place, then extract the keys from the old drive and use jungleflasher to flash with the ixtreme firmware. Then flash that to the new drive and put back in the 360…

    Hope that helps.

    Hi
I wonder if you can help, i tried to flash my xbox with this tuturial, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxWgd8R06lo&feature=related), it seams preaty easy, and i found several posts and videos talking about the same way to flash an xbox, i used jungle flasher 1.74, and liteon ixtreme lt 1.1.
After i got the keys, and saved my cfw, i couldn’t erase my drive, every time i tried i got 0×0, or 0×51, never 0×72 as shown on the videos and enumerous tuturials i have. I’m stuck at that point, and to make matters worse, the dvd drive doesn’t close, it’s constantly open, i presume waiting to be flashed.
    Any sugestions???

    Thank you

    Hi chris.
    Thank you for your response.
I connect my computer through sata, and power it through the xbox360.
The drive responds in a way, if i press the button it will close, but opens straight away within seconds.
i don’t know if you concider this unresponsive.
When i conect everything to the xbox, as normal, it doesn’t read the cd, as it is allways opening.
    Any sugestions?
after i’ve done all that half open fully open process, it stayed open and never closed properly again.

    Thank you for your help.

    Ricardo,

Check all of the cables on the connector that connects the drive to the motherboard, if pin 3 is removed I think the drive will stay open. Just make sure that they are all connected and that you didn’t accidentally plug the cables in backwards.

I checked the cables, tried with diferent cables, even used other dvd drives, but nothing.
The light on the xbox button keeps flashing, and on screen it says opening, and the drive opens auto.
I read somewere that it could be a problem on the spindle, that it might be damaged, but im not sure.
I still have to verify this.

If you have any other ideas, i will be gratefull.

As long as your drive is still readable you should be able to extract the keys. The keys should still be present on the drive, the only thing that changes when you mod is the firmware.

I haven’t checked the pin on the drive itself yet, but I did try using a power connector from another 360. I took a quick look at the pins on the board at that time which looked ok. I’ll check pins on the drive to be sure they are intact. Just as an FYI, I did not actually use the ck3 or probe. I got the drive key using a homemade circuit. Not sure if maybe this may have affected the drive somehow.

Hi chris, thanks for the tutorial.
I’ve built the probe and i’m going to flash my liteon 74850c. Although before i do, i had a few questions. i have ordered them as most important to the top.

-Is it ok to use a USB to db9 adapter to flash the drive. Do I need to install drivers for it etc?
-Also can i use a sata cable which is connected directly to my computers motherboard or do i need a via card?
-Also i’ve read something about portio32, what is that and do i need it?
-Do i need to disable Driver Signature Enforcement ( i am using windows 7) so that jungle flasher works properly?
-do i connect the ground of the probe to the xbox frame or the pc frame?
-should i disconnect the laser ribbon before the whole process?

Many thanks in advance chris, and i appreciate your taking your time to help me. Thanks.

    Babz,

    Good luck with flashing..

As long as your USB to db9 adapter includes a driver that your computer recognizes and properly emulates a serial port, I don’t foresee any problems.

The SATA cable can be directly connected to your motherboard

I’ve never used portio32 so I can’t really give you any advice there, my guess is that its some sort of driver that Jungle Flasher uses.

I haven’t tried the procedure on Windows 7, but I would almost bet on the fact that you might need to disable Driver Signature Enforcement

You can connect the ground probe to any metal chassis that has a ground connection

To be on the safe side you can disconnect the ribbon, although I never found it necessary.

Hope this info helps, post back with your results, maybe they can help someone else.

Hi, got my USB to serial adapter today and connected it to my PC. Seemed to be recognised fine by jungle flasher after installing the correct drivers.

However my PC wasn’t recognising my drive at first. I rebooted my pc and my drive so many times, until i found out that before my i could get my sata connection working i had to change a bios setting, something like AHIC to SATA (so if anyone else is using onboard sata ports, try changing this setting).

Anyway after that, my PC did recognise my drive. However before extracting my key I thought I would turn the sleep setting of my Xbox off. Next thing i know, i turned on my Xbox and i have the e76 1030 error.

After googling for ages, it seems to be that the ICS1893 chip has caused this error. Apparently it can happen due to power surges and I have read on some forums about this fault, this has happened to some people (very few) while flashing their liteons.

My Xbox now seems irreparable and after arguing with my mum loads about flashing the Xbox (guaranteeing to her that everything would go smoothly), I’m sort of worried telling her it’s broken.

Hi, still searching for fixes. Btw, thought I would mention something I found out to everyone wishing to use Chris’s guide to flash their drives. When flashing your drive while powering it with you Xbox, PLEASE BE AWARE that you can cause a surge to the motherboard, when unplugging the dvd drive’s power cable when the Xbox is on (obviously you need to do this while power cycling as part of the flashing process). Although there is a very small chance of this happening, it CAN happen -as i found out- and you will regret it when you come to terms with the fact that in an attempt to play backups of your games, you end up breaking your Xbox with very few options left for repair (if you get the e76 error). To be safe I would recommend not powering the drive with the Xbox or just paying someone else with the correct tools to flash it.

However I still must give credit to Chris for the tutorial as in most cases the extracting and flashing process will go smoothly and also there are few tutorials out there which are as good as describing the flashing process using a homemade/DIY probe.

I think this will be the last hack/flash i attempt without knowing the full potential risks.

    Babz,

I didn’t know about this issue and appreciate you sharing it with everyone. After a while of modding 360′s I simply got tired of constantly having to use the 360 to power the drives, so I ended up building my own power supply. Would anyone be interested at all in a schematic for a power supply that can connect to your computers SATA power adapter to power the 360 drive?

Hi, apparently the latest dashboard update changes ALL liteon drives to 02501c firmware. Does this mean that the homemade probe can no longer be used to extract the key?

    Regards, Bablu.

    Babz,

I’m not sure, I have not experienced this particular situation. Wish I could give you a definite answer. My guess though is, if Microsoft is updating the firmware on the drives they may be limiting certain features of the chip but like I said I can’t be 100% sure.

    Chris,

It is NOT legal to make backups of video games in most countries (including the States) even for archival purposes. Owning a video game doesn’t legally entitle anyone to a digital copy or backup… This is a common misconception.

However, it IS legal to modify your XBOX 360 as you wish, and use it to run homebrew games and applications.

Just thought you should know. Look it up.

Chris, my 360 was given to me and I believe that it was sent to you to be modded in the past. It’s has an old dashboard from 09 that I can’t update. Also, I’ve tried flashing it many times but I can’t get it to read. I’m guessing because it was a samsung drive spoofed as a lite-on. Anywho, I dont have the backup dump disc and it’s too big to use as a paper weight. I don’t know what to do.
